Airport Adds Solar Array to Boost Resiliency

A newly built facilities warehouse at Naples Airport features an innovative solar array that further enhances the airfield’s resiliency while reaffirming its commitment to sustainability.

The airport installed 270 solar panels on the roof of a warehouse storage building near the North Road Terminal and Fuel Farm. Now fully operational, the system produces approximately 100 kilowatts of AC-generating capacity per day. The airport’s total investment was $249,665 and its projected payback period – the time it takes to recoup costs through energy savings and government rebates – is 5.7 years.

General contractor Owen-Ames- Kimball led construction of the airport’s new building, while PayOli Energy designed and installed the rooftop solar array. Engineered for Florida’s extreme weather, the non-penetrating system powers the facility while preserving its roof warranty and maintaining a sleek, low-profile aesthetic.

The introduction of solar power adds to Naples Airport’s list of sustainability initiatives, which include alternative, cleaner-burning fuels and the conversion of many ground vehicles and equipment from gas to electric. Additionally, Naples Airport authorized the design and construction of a new water management system that filters water and removes impurities before runoff flows into the Gordon River and Naples Bay.

Naples Airport is home to critical public services and serves as a staging hub for recovery operations during emergencies.
