Naples-based DeAngelis Diamond Construction has been selected as the construction manager/general contractor for the new Southwest Florida International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower and Tracon Building, which will replace a 31-year-old structure.

The new tower is expected to cost $50 million in total and is a prerequisite to adding a second runway and expanded terminal.

At 215 feet, it will be almost twice the height of the existing tower.

Also, at 17,000sf, the tower and building combined will be almost twice the size of the existing facility, which was built before the airport opened in 1983. These improvements will align the airport with the latest Federal Aviation Administration standards for towers, as well as current building and hurricane codes.

Work is expected to commence during the third quarter and will require an almost four-year commitment from DeAngelis Diamond. Others working on the project include national architect POND, local architect SchenkelShultz and tower subconsultant J. Kokolakis Contracting.
