The new Glass Animal Hospital and Smith Animal Commissary is now open at Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens.
GATES Construction built the $4.4 million, one-story building, which totals 9,144sf and replaces the zoo’s previous animal care facility, a 10-foot by 15-foot “vet shed.” The project was completely funded by Tanya and Denny Glass, Vickie and David Smith, and other donors.
The new building features a full surgical suite, hospitalization holding areas and treatment rooms, hospitalization, diagnostic lab, necropsy examination room, pharmacy, commissary, and administrative rooms. Besides enhancing the zoo’s animal healthcare capabilities, the development of the new hospital was required to maintain accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Furthermore, the facility is expected to fully address the zoo’s veterinary needs and provide space to care for injured or abandoned Florida panthers in collaboration with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It may also be used to shelter more than 100 animals in the event of a hurricane.
